Obit for a namesake

This was in Creative Loafing, an alt publication in Tampa Bay. Someone died who had the same name as the writer, Alex Pickett. He wanted to know more. I thought it was a cool story.

What a terrific story, Stephanie!

I love that sort of stuff.

One of our local funeral directors used to talk about throwing an "Insert-name-here" reunion for everyone he could find who shared his name. I don't think he ever did.

I'd be inclined to do something like that. Problem is - How many Alana Baranicks are there in this country? For that matter, how many are there in the world?

I'm guessing I've cornered the market on my name. If I resorted to my maiden name, it would be even less likely I'd find anyone with the same name. My maiden name was Alana Miltak. I believe there are only a handful of Miltaks in the U.S.

Have you ever encountered or at least heard about another Stephanie Hayes?

I once got turned down for an apartment because another local Stephanie Hayes had a rampant criminal record. I got the OK to move in once I pointed out that our middle names, and, you know, EVERYTHING ELSE, were different.

Wonder how she's doing...

Alana - There are currently 18,283 people in the U.S. with the first name Alana and 762 people with the last name Baranick. But according to, you are the only one with both names. What an original you are!

BTW, there are 27 people in the U.S. named Jade Walker, but I'm betting I'm the only one with Egypt as a middle name.
