Where he wasn't born

"He once joked on radio that he had been born under a whelk stall in Walton; his mother was furious."
Guardian obit of British comedian Cyril Fletcher (1/3/05)

If only more of the people I write about had thought to say things like this before they needed nothing but gravity to hold them down.

i get the idea, but i don't think i completely understand the humor in the example you cited, claire. it's probably lost in translation to me.

but i have been lucky to find some cool things that my obit subjects said.

one of my favorite obit quotes came from harvey beavers, who had been a cop and a chef. he claimed to have found the recipe for a happy life.

when he retired, he told a reporter, "i've had a good life. if there is such a thing as reincarnation, i want to come back as harvey beavers."

what a happy camper he was!
