Hoofer Sergava finally dead?

A tip 'o the tam to Daily Telegraph obits editor Andrew McKie, who regaled us with the original story of how this obituary appeared, wrongly, in his paper, prior to the NYTimes lifting it. I still remember him saying, "I'm still not convinced she's not dead!" But she was yet among the living, if the Grey Lady speaks true.

In 2003, the NYTimes published the obituary of the Broadway hoofer Katharine Sergava. Reports of her death were greatly exaggerated. In the Times's correction, they admitted to having picked the report out of the Daily Telegraph, and running it without verifying it. Now the Times is running her obituary again, and this time it would appear to be confirmed - although if it turns out to be wrong, it would be some kind of record!

Under the circumstances, it seems a bit unsporting of the Times to only give her 5 brief grafs.

BODY:

An obituary on this page yesterday erroneously reported the death of Katharine Sergava, a dancer and an actress who portrayed the dream-ballet version of Laurey, the heroine, in the original production of "Oklahoma!" Friends of hers reported the error yesterday.

The obituary was based on one in The Daily Telegraph of London on Nov. 29. The Times was unable to confirm her death independently and, through reporting and editing errors, omitted attribution. The Telegraph says it has begun its own inquiry.

Ms. Sergava, who is 94 and has lived in Manhattan for many years, was hospitalized in November and is now in a nursing home.
